PADI Divemaster or Instructor Job in Cabo San Lucas
A typical working day in the life of a PADI Divemaster or Instructor in Cabo San Lucas starts with a 7:30 am commute to work, walking or cycling the short distance from the neighborhood where most of us live to the marina, where the dive centers are.
There is a huge number of visitors to the Los Cabos region of Mexico each year, from student backpackers to families to business groups and they all come here for the amazing experiences of Baja, Mexico. Learning to dive, encountering humpback whales, refining dive skills with a Nitrox course, to ‘Go Pro’ with one of our PADI training programs, going surfing on one of the many great local beaches and enjoying world class night life are all fun experiences here in Cabo.
As a dive pro in Cabo you’ll never find a job that has so much variety. One day you’ll be introducing a family to the amazing underwater sea life here, with the PADI Open Water diver course, guiding new divers through schools of tiny baitfish as sea lions dance gracefully underwater, trust us – this unique multi sensory experience becomes a wonderful memory and they will never forget you for the work you have done with them. At other times you will be guiding advanced Nitrox dives into the deep blue sea mounts of Gordo Banks, looking at schooling tuna, silky and hammerhead sharks with people who normally run banks, are judges or lawyers, doctors, or everyday parents (heros to us all too!).
Lunch time here means no hiding from the rain that so much of the Caribbean suffers from (and no bugs either!), instead find a nice sunny spot, grab a few dollars worth of delicious fajitas or quesadillas and enjoy the warmth of Cabo year round. Spend time catching up with fellow dive pros from the other centers around Cabo, hearing about their mornings encounters and where to find that frogfish on Pelican Rock. Afternoons may be more dives, introducing a small group of clients to diving with Discover Scuba or head to the beach for some great surfing along the Corridor.
In the evening the local night spot for divers in Cabo is ‘Jungle Bar’ where drinks are $1 and meals are $5. Enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow dive pros, welcome some of your divers out for a few drinks and dinner, all as the sun sets on a beautiful day here in Cabo San Lucas. For the adventurous, this is when Cabo’s night attractions start opening, with friendly faces, dancing and cocktails flowing.
As for the quality of life in Cabo and as a dive pro goes, a testimony to the great opportunity of living and working here is that many people who come for a visit return many times, families tend to purchase homes (and keep coming diving with you) and lots of divers chose to make their home and careers here. There are a lot of North American, South American and European ex-pats living in Cabo and as such there is a great flair of international cuisine, tons of activities and areas to explore that keep you engaged with the Cabo life (ask us about “No Bad Days” when you get here).
Personally I have worked and dove many parts of the world, Playa del Carmen in Mexico, Roatan and Utila in Honduras, Saba and St Maarten in the eastern Caribbean, Cairns in Australia and more. However no where has impressed me as much with the friendliness of the people and great quality of living in Cabo. So much so that I still look forward to my daily work, evenings at home or out with friends in the welcoming ambiance of the restaurants and bars here.
The average cost of living in Cabo is about $500 a month with another $200 for accommodation, thats all. Cabo has been a well kept secret in Mexico for many years, safety, value and opportunity unequalled. There is more to Cabo than the rock star and movie star mansions, we even get to share a $1 beer with them some nights!
